Living with an eating disorder isn’t easy.

(understatement of the century)

The symptoms of an eating disorder or disordered eating can be hard to identify — especially when you’ve lived with them for a long time, you’ve always been concerned with food and health, or you aren’t quite ready to admit how much this is affecting your life.

You might even seem "just fine!" on the outside, but on the inside you're...

Constantly stressing over calories, clean eating, and the nutrition details of any food that even comes near you

Swinging between feeling completely out of control around food, binge eating, and punishing yourself for it

Canceling plans, avoiding restaurants, or engineering your whole day around eating — or not eating

Looking in the mirror and not trusting what you see — or avoiding mirrors and reflective windows altogether

Saying "It’s okay, I’m not hungry!" so often, you've almost convinced yourself it's true

Exhausted by how much mental energy goes toward food, your body, and what others think about both

If that’s been your reality lately, we want you to know that it’s okay to…

  • Not really know what “recovery” would look like for you, what you want to be different, or where to even start
  • Wonder if it’s really “bad enough” for you to get help (spoiler alert: if it’s impacting your life or something you want to change, it is)
  • Have a complicated history with eating disorder treatment or therapy that’s left you unsure of your next options
  • Not feel completely “ready” to start — no one ever really is, we promise

This stuff is messy — and helping you untangle it, make sense of it, and move through it is exactly what we’re here for.

Would it be too cheesy to tell you we’re proud of you for getting help?

even if it is, we're okay with it.

Recovering from an eating disorder, working toward a better relationship with food, and making peace with your body are all hard work — and deciding to get help might be the hardest part of all.

Whatever brought you to this page (and wherever you are in your journey), we want you to know: that you’re not too far gone, this does not have to be your forever, and you don't have to figure out the next step alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to recover from an eating disorder? +

We know this may not be what you want to hear, but it's different for everyone — and anyone who gives you a hard number probably isn't being straight with you. What we can tell you is that meaningful change takes time, and we generally recommend giving therapy at least six months before you evaluate whether it's working. Recovery isn't linear, and progress doesn't always look the way you expect it to. What matters is that you're in it, and that you're not in it alone.

What kind of therapy works best for eating disorders? +

There's no one-size-fits-all answer here, which is exactly why we take a personalized approach to every client. Our therapists are trained in evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, ACT, and IFS (all proven effective for eating disorder treatment) and we'll work with you to figure out what fits. What we lead with, always, is the therapeutic relationship — because the research is clear that the connection between you and your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of progress.

What does eating disorder therapy cost? +

Our session fees vary by therapist. We are out of network with insurance for therapy services, but we can provide monthly superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement depending on your benefits.

Do I need a therapist, a dietitian, or both? +

We recommend including both a therapist and a dietitian in your recovery — because they're doing two very different jobs. A therapist helps you get to the root of it: the thoughts, the patterns, the deeper "why" underneath the behaviors. A dietitian helps you heal physically and rebuild your relationship with food in a real, practical way. One without the other often leaves a piece of the puzzle missing.

That said, a lot of people start with one and add the other when they're ready. If you already have an RD you love, we'll coordinate with them directly. And if you're looking for nutrition support too, we've got you covered in-house.

I've tried therapy before and it didn't work. How is this different? +

We hear this a lot, and we really do get it. A bad therapy experience (or a good therapist who just wasn't the right fit) can make it really hard to try again. The difference at Grow With Gabi Counseling is specialization: our therapists don't dabble in eating disorder work. It's what we do, and it's what we've built our practice around. That means you won't get advice that makes you feel like you're the problem. You'll get a therapist who already understands the complexity of what you're dealing with, and knows how to actually help you move through it.

Is my eating disorder "bad enough" to get help? +

Yes. Full stop. Eating disorders exist on a spectrum, and you don't need to be in crisis to deserve support. If food and your body are taking up more space in your life than you'd like — that's enough. You don't have to earn your way into recovery.

Can you work with me if I'm not ready to fully change my behaviors yet? +

We can, and we want to be honest with you about what that looks like. Ambivalence is a completely normal part of the recovery process — you don't have to walk in with your mind made up. What we ask is that you show up and stay curious. We'll meet you exactly where you are and work from there.

What's the difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating? +

An eating disorder is a diagnosed clinical condition — like anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder — with specific criteria. Disordered eating refers to patterns and behaviors around food that cause distress or interfere with your life, but may not meet the threshold for a formal diagnosis. Both are real, both deserve care, and we treat both.

Can I book a therapy session for anxiety, depression, or something not ED-related? +

Yes! We see and treat clients with a wide variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, OCD, and major life transitions (marriage, divorce, going to college, etc). Inquire here to get started!
